“Massacre” or “Incident?”

我會訂閱一些英文媒體粉絲頁，倒不是我一定每篇都會點進去看全文 (我這麼沒耐心的人怎麼可能看全文？=.=) 而是我會去注意標題怎麼用字。

The News Lens International Edition 是我訂閱的其中一份媒體，一方面是因為內容與台灣有關，一方面是文句簡潔清楚。

這篇內文讓我點進去看了，因為文章提到的 10 facts，第一項就是：“Massacre” or “Incident?”。

這篇文章開頭就先解釋文中的選字，畢竟牽涉到敏感議題，用詞遣字須謹慎：
"Even today, using the word “massacre” or “incident” with 228 is controversial. To one it may seem to be an issue of semantics, but to the Taiwanese, each word implies a different connotation to 228 and the size of the conflict. “Massacre” implies outright mass killing without restraint while “incident” implies a violent occurrence. For nonpartisan purposes, “incident” was chosen over “massacre” for this article."

 文章作者為了保持中立，文章選擇用 “incident”。(但還是要注意，文章僅代表作者自己的立場。) 這篇文章也適合用來教 facts or opinions  的閱讀技巧。

我常常認為，對一個語言的熟稔度就在於如何精準用字，母語也是一樣，不然我們都會說中文，為何還需要國文課呢？外國人也一樣呀，都會講英文，就代表英文很好嗎？
